Compensation
The salary range for this position is $95,000–$130,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. As an early hire, you will also receive a meaningful equity stake in the company. About the Role
Do you want to help create the first generation of medical robotics tools for trauma patients?
Every year, people die from injuries they could have survived if a trauma surgeon had reached them in time. Lightside Surgical is building a portable, field-deployable robotics platform that can control life-threatening bleeding whether the patient is in an ambulance, at a rural clinic, or on the scene. We need you to help us achieve our goal: Making survival depend less on how close you are to an experienced trauma surgeon.
We are building a next-generation medical simulation platform used in the development of AI-assisted robotic trauma intervention tools. We simulate everything before we build it. Our simulation technology uses physics-based modeling to create realistic, interactive human tissues to train and validate new robotic trauma tools.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent Master's or PhD graduate. Previous professional experience is not required. We value strong technical fundamentals, and the curiosity and motivation to work on challenging new problems.

Responsibilities
- Design and implement real-time interactive physics-based simulation algorithms for soft tissue, fluids, and robotic systems.
- Develop and extend the core simulation engine in C++ and HLSL.
- Improve simulation accuracy, stability, and computational performance.
- Model deformable bodies, contact, collision detection, and material behavior.
- Collaborate with the robotics team to facilitate new design development and compare simulation results to real-life behaviors.
- Contribute to the architecture and long-term evolution of the simulation codebase.
- Master's or PhD in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of mathematics used in physical simulation, including areas such as:
- Linear algebra
- Differential equations
- Continuum mechanics
- Strong programming skills, including proficiency in C++ (or a comparable systems language).
- Understanding of soft-body physics simulation methods, including constitutive models, collision detection methods, and constraint solvers.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a collaborative startup environment.
Additional Qualifications

- Fluid simulation
- Robotics simulation
- GPU computing or parallel programming
